I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hopped on a call or sat in a presentation genuinely excited to hear about an organisation’s impact - only to feel my mind drifting, my feet tapping, my hand inching toward my phone.

And it’s not because the work isn’t good. Quite the opposite - the work is often incredible. But too many purpose-driven orgs assume that because their mission is important, people will automatically stay engaged. Spoiler: they won’t.

Let’s be clear: I’m not saying you need to juggle or stage a Broadway number to hold attention. And we definitely don’t want impact orgs to resort to manipulative or exploitative tactics.

But we do live in a world where attention spans are shorter than ever. If you want people to care, you need to make it easy for them to care. That means:

  • Stories told with passion and heart.

  • Presentations that are designed to engage, not overwhelm.

  • Pitches that get to the point without drowning people in detail.

Talking more does not mean talking better.

Entrepreneurs are trained to pitch. They practice until they can sum up their mission in 30 seconds and hook an investor in five minutes. They know their elevator pitch, their values, their impact, and they deliver it clearly, confidently, and with a spark.

Nonprofits? Social enterprises? Even foundations? Too often the answer to “So what do you do?” turns into a winding monologue full of acronyms, tangents, and too much backstory. The passion is there, but it gets buried under information overload.

The good news is: storytelling is a skill. It can be practiced. It can be sharpened. And when it is, the difference is immediate. People listen. People remember. People want to know more.


Humans first, funders second

Yes, funders and partners will always (probably, hopefully) do their due diligence. They’ll look at the reports, numbers, and evidence. But before any of that, they’re people. And people respond to clarity, to compelling stories, to feeling like their time is valued.

A sharp, engaging story doesn’t replace your data. It opens the door so people actually want to dig into your data.
